Video Visual Symbols

My husband recently asked me about a commercial for Ragu spaghetti sauce that I posted on Facebook. He thought that the little boys facial expressions where hilarious.  But my husband asked me what was behind the door that made the boy react the way he did. My husband had watched the video with the sound set so low that he could not hear the words to the song. The words to the song and the video together tell the whole story. Without one or the other the full meaning is lost. Watch the Ragu commercial below first without sound. Try to guess what is happening. Then watch it again with sound.

As a future Special Education teacher, I need to be aware of children's disabilities and how that can effect the meaning they are getting from a video. Although there is closed captioning available for some programs, most videos will not have that. Even with closed captioning, some meaning is lost without the music to set the mood.
